In this lesson, we learn how to find the distance between two points in a plane by using the Pythagorean theorem to create a right triangle. We also learn how to derive the distance formula by subtracting the x and y coordinates of the two points and squaring them, then taking the square root of the sum of the squares. The order in which we subtract the coordinates does not matter as long as we square them. We are also shown how to simplify the formula and use it to find the distance between two points given their coordinates.
Shows how to use pythagorean theorem to derive the distance formula between 2 points, and provides one example.
