A basic explanation of sets, operations, and opposites of numbers.
  • What are the different sets of real numbers and what numbers belong to each set?
  • What are the operations you can perform on numbers?
  • How do you write and find the opposite of a number?
  • What are the natural or counting numbers?
  • What is an ordered set of numbers, and what are some examples of ordered sets?
  • What is the additive identity element?

  • How do you subtract a negative number?
  • Where did the operations of subtraction, multiplication, and division come from?

This lesson continues to expound on numbers. You will learn to categorize real numbers into several different sets, how to do operations on numbers, and find the opposite of numbers. This is a follow-up to the basic introduction to what numbers are. The operations and opposites are built from the ground up in this elementary look at numbers and our number system. The word opposite is sometimes used in this lesson to mean reciprocal.
