First, learn to write word statements as mathematical expressions. Then, combine like terms to simplify the expressions.

  • What are like terms?
  • How do you combine like terms?
  • How do you translate word statements into mathematical expressions?
  • How do you simplify twice the sum of five and a number, subtracted from three times the number?
  • How can you distribute and use properties of real numbers to simplify 3x - 2(5 + x)?
  • How do you simplify the difference of a number and 3 added to three times the number?
  • How can you use properties of real numbers to simplify 3x + (x - 3)?
This lesson goes through some more examples of combining like terms to simplify expressions. In this lesson, however, you must take a word statement and write it is a math expression first. Another great lesson for learning how to combine like terms with all steps explained very well.
