This method of adding / subtracting fractions with unlike denominators makes operations with fractions seem much quicker and easier. It requires more simplifying at the end, but it certainly makes getting a common denominator and adding the two fractions very quick and simple. In some cases, however, it makes the numbers so large that it makes the problem even more difficult!
